Ian Thomas

Speaker Ian Thomas has an outstanding background as a Tracker and Author.
Speaker Ian Thomas is a rare person. He is a business graduate who studied lions at close quarters during many years as a game ranger in Africa.

Ian attained the highest tracking and guiding qualification possible, that of a Scout, awarded to him by The Field Guides Association of South Africa. The award recognizes excellence in guiding in big game areas, weapon handling, and tracking. Speaker Ian Thomas was the first person to achieve this distinction. During his time as a guide, he discovered that he had a talent for teaching and story telling, which led to a career in public speaking. He has traveled internationally, and spoken in Europe, Asia, USA and Africa.

As one of the worlds top motivational speakers, Ian uses that deep knowledge to transform teams. A dynamic and inspiring presenter, he believes that people, and especially business people, can absorb and learn from the animal kingdom.

The study of lions in the wild has involved Ian in far more than the gathering of biological data. Discussions with business men and women while viewing lions has made him aware of the social interaction, hunting techniques and defense strategies among individual lions with vastly different personalities, strengths and weaknesses. His two keynote addresses, The Power of the Pride and The Spoor of Success have been heard by delegates in thousands of companies in more than 30 countries.

The Power of the Pride is a riveting and informative account of how lions, the only cats that hunt in teams, can be compared with how businesses operate as teams. The Spoor of Success illustrates how a daunting challenge can be a powerful motivator, with the potential to lift the performance of both the individual and the business. Ian's book, The Power of the Pride is a bestseller.

Speaker Ian Thomas is a frequent guest on radio and television talk shows and has featured in many local and international management magazines. He is also one of South Africa's foremost wildlife photographers.

If you want to motivate and transform your team, you should seriously consider Ian Thomas as the motivational speaker for your conference, workshop or training session.

The Spoor of Success

Is there something that you as an individual, or you and your team, regard as a formidable, but worthy challenge? Something that would really shake things up! Something so wonderful that if you pulled it off, would be regarded as a major success, and would substantially enhance your reputation!

Do you intend to pursue it, hunt it, overcome it? Do you intend to succeed?

Are you up for a fight? Because if you want to achieve something spectacular, something daunting: you must realise that it is going to be a fight!

Most people don't want to change, even if the final outcome would be better. Why? The answer is simple. We find it difficult, because no matter how unsatisfying it is where we are, it is also comfortable. And comfort is seductive! Why, because we are used to it, we understand it, and perceive it to be safe. And therein lies its power.

Some of the principles that are highlighted in this presentation:
- Make the difficult choices, doing nothing is dangerous.
- The goal must be crystal clear and the method of achieving it completely understood.
- You need people who are exceptional at what they do; everyone involved must be highly skilled, involved, and motivated: no passengers: no pretenders.
- Vastly improved results must be rapidly achieved with the same or less costs: work smarter, work harder.
- New sources of competitive advantage must be actively sought.

The presentation will illustrate that a crisis can be a powerful motivator and has the potential to lift the performance of both the individual and the business.

The Power of the Pride

The pride structure unfolded on the great grassy savannas of Africa, a veld rumbling with wild animals. Lions evolved alongside the herds and the interaction between hunter, hunted and competitor forged them into teams of superbly effective hunters and fighters.

These teams collectively known as prides flourished, and they emerged as a potent example of teamwork for maximum effect.

The following ten powers lean towards a win-win situation: if the pride and its members thrive, same can be applied on the corporate life - meaning there is a high expectancy that the business and its individuals will thrive as well! This presentation reveals why teams or prides are successful:

- each individual member is skillful, powerful and energetic; many of them have special skills.
- total focus is on clear-cut and often ambitious goals.
- communication is vital and is enhanced by active listening and being alert to opportunities.
- incentives motivate and reward success.
- trust is crucial; pride members are focused and cohesive.
- the structure is flat.
- strict selection ensures that there are no passengers.
- training is intense, continuous and fun, while the use of image enhances function.
- synergy: the pride is more powerful than the sum of individuals' strengths.
